C5 – Mobility in Portugal
The C5 mobility of the project iCulture (Erasmus+) took place in Povoação (Portugal), between the 24th and the 28th of April.Thirteen students and 8 teachers from the partner schools (from France, Italy, Norway and Poland) joined the Portuguese team to take part on the Learning, Teaching and Training Activities organized by the host school, Escola Básica e Secundária da Povoação.
After the official welcome and an icebreaking activity, the students went on a scavenger hunt around the town to find out about the local history, culture and traditions. On the same day, the students attended a workshop on shadow theatre. In this workshop, the participants learned how to transform simple materials into shadows, using a variety of lighting and projection methods, got an overview of the basic principles of creating shadows, reflections and separate colours. Participants created short shadow scenes in small groups and performed to one another.
In the evening, the host school organized a Community Day, celebrating the Holy Spirit festivities, to raise funds for the school library. The LTTA participants were invited to take part and learn about local culture (music, dance and gastronomy), hanging out with local artists.
The second day of the mobility, being a national holiday in Portugal, was dedicated to a bus tour around the island. Despite the foggy weather, it was possible to enjoy the landscape in several points of the island and share a picnic at Lagoa das Sete Cidades.
On the 26th of April, the group attended a workshop on video editing, held by a team of producers from RTP Açores, in Ponta Delgada. Here, the film ‘Beauty is a beast’ was finalized, putting together the contributions of all the partners, after some team work from the students. After lunch, a visit to Teatro Micaelense, the biggest theatre building of the island, was planned and, there, the students were expected to present the records of their group work on shadow theatre. However, sudden, heavy and unexpected rain led to a change of plans: the visit to Teatro Micaelense was cancelled and the return to Povoação happened earlier than expected. In the evening, the students, the teachers and the host families got together at Miradouro do Pôr-do-Sol, to enjoy a barbecue prepared by the families.
The next day, Thursday, was all about Furnas, starting with a walk around Furnas lake, a visit to Mata-Jardim José do Canto, its chapel and Cascata do Rosal, an impressive waterfall. During the afternoon, the participants were invited to explore the magnificent garden at Terra Nostra Park, and bathe on its thermal pool. After that, there was some free time to explore Furnas and the Caldeiras area, where it was possible to see the volcanic activity of this region through the geysers. At dinner time, the participants had the opportunity to meet again with the hosting families and share a Cozido, a traditional dish cooked underground, thanks to the heat of the earth.
On the last day of this mobility, the participants got together at the Auditorium to watch the final video of the ‘Beauty is a beast’ challenge. In the afternoon, they took a hike in Faial da Terra. This hike takes the pedestrians to a waterfall (Salto do Prego) and to a former abandoned village (Sanguinho), nowadays a tourism development.
This way, the LTTA in Portugal ended with another opportunity to be in contact with nature and enjoy a friendly and happy atmosphere.
Next stop: Oristano, Italy, in less than one month.
